Review: Four Seconds To Lose

Four Seconds To Lose by K.A. Tucker

Four Seconds To Lose is the third novel in the Ten Tiny Breaths series by K.A. Tucker. You can find the review for Ten Tiny Breaths and One Tiny Lie by clicking on each title. These novels do not have to be read as a series, they can be read as stand alones instead, since they all focus on different main characters. That said, I would highly suggest that you read them in order, just so when you see some of the past characters pop up, you won't be confused or spoiled on accident.

In the first two books, we met the amazing duo Kacey and Livie. Due to the sister's circumstances, we also briefly meet Cain in the first book. Cain is the male lead in Four Seconds To Lose, alongside a new character - Charlie Rourke.... though to Cain, Charlie seems more like a ghost from the past than the new girl in town.

Charlie has been put through the ringer by her step dad. Though he obviously loves her in his own weird way, he loves himself and his money, quite a bit more and is willing to put Charlie's life in danger to get that money and keep the lifestyle he lives. It doesn't come without payment to Charlie, but does the payment outweigh the risk? In this situation, I can say with a resounding "no" that the risk is not worth the reward.

Cain is in the business of changing lives - through what seems to be an extremely backwards way. He's got a lot of demons that he's dealing with and he's pretty much a brick wall when it comes to emotions and feelings. With Charlie though, he gets a bit of a second chance and to see him take it by the reins and run with it, was awesome, and really made me fall in love with him. The way he faces his demons down and decides not to let them run his life is truly inspirational. On a side note, Charlie is more for Cain than his boner can handle.

The way that Charlie, in turn, takes charge of her life and her situation is one of those things that just makes you feel strong. I felt proud of her for being a strong woman at the young age of 18 and for deciding that she was the only person who should be able to make choices about her safety. She's an amazing character.

K.A. writes in her acknowledgements that this was one of the hardest books she's written. Her risk was worth the reward. I don't doubt for a minute that there were scenes in this book that were downright grueling to get right - but K.A. gets them right. This book is full of crazy lives and crazy situations that end in one of the best (and most unexpected) endings I've ever had the joy of reading! Read this Book!!!

Book Summary:

When a gorgeous young dancer walks through his door, a strip club owner must decide whether to follow his rules or his heart in the third novel by the author of One Tiny Lie and Ten Tiny Breaths.

Owning a strip club isn’t the fantasy most guys expect it to be. With long hours, a staff with enough issues to keep a psych ward in business, and the police regularly on his case, twenty-nine-year-old Cain is starting to second guess his unspoken mission to save the women he employs. And then blond, brown-eyed Charlie Rourke walks through his door, and things get really complicated. Cain abides by a strict “no sleeping with the staff” rule. But being around Charlie challenges Cain’s self-control…and it’s been a long time since any woman has done that.

Twenty-two-year-old Charlie Rourke needs a lot of money, really fast, in order to vanish before it’s too late. Taking her clothes off for men makes her stomach curl but Charlie tells herself that at least she’s putting her acting and dancing skills to good use. And though her fellow dancers seem eager to nab their sexy, sophisticated, and genuinely caring boss, she’s not interested. After all, Charlie Rourke doesn’t really exist—and the girl pretending to be her can't get distracted by romance.

Unfortunately, Charlie soon discovers that developing feelings for Cain is inevitable, and that those feelings may not be unrequited—but losing him when he finds out what she’s involved with will be more painful than any other sentence awaiting her

ABOUT K.A. TUCKER:
Born in small-town Ontario, Kathleen published her first book at the age of six with the help of her elementary school librarian and a box of crayons. She is a voracious reader and the farthest thing from a genre-snob, loving everything from High Fantasy to Chick Lit.
