Blurb

As Tampa Bay's star center, Mark Carmelo's life was hockey, and after a bitter and public break up, all he wanted to do was focus on the game.
Until he saw her.
The one that got away.
The one he thought he'd never see again.

For thirteen years, Stevie West drowned in her lackluster life. Recently divorced from her “roommate” with passionless benefits, she was ready to start over. On her own.
Until she ran into him.
The same man she'd met one year ago.
The temptation that had finally given her the courage to find herself again.

When lightning strikes twice, there’s no way to deny the chemistry it creates.
But with both of them still nursing old wounds, Mark and Stevie will have to find a way around the other's defenses, a way to breakaway and score the one thing they never expected… love.

"There was nothing stopping me this time, no one defending, no obstacles between me and her. When her shock faded and her eyes fell to my mouth, I knew I had an open shot."

It's no secret that Johnson is one of my all time favorite authors. Every time she puts her fingers to the keyboard, I want to know what's coming. Frankly, I would read her grocery list. This lady knows what it means to write a novel and tell an amazing story.

Johnson has a way with words that gives me chills and leaves me gasping for more. And Breakaway is no different. Though this book takes on the lighter side of her writing, I found myself begging for more and never wanting it to end. I was lucky enough to get to read this book in the making and watching it come to life, is one of the coolest things I've ever gotten to experience.

"She was fuel and I was the match begging to catch her fire."

Breakaway is the first book in The Rulebook Collection, a series of standalone reads and follows the story of Stevie West and Mark Carmelo. Stevie's life is on the rocks. She's freshly divorced and starting a new job. Stevie is a bold character and I LOVE her. She's grasping with how to live her life alone but when she runs into him...the man she met a year ago at this exact bar, she thinks maybe this is a sign. Or possibly a chance at love again.

But Stevie has no idea that he's a hockey god. Center for Tampa Bay Lighting... Mark Carmelo is in his prime. He's scoring goals, winning games, and life is good. But when he sees her, he knows now is his chance. And one of the best things about her, she knows nothing about hockey or who he is in the NHL world.

"Whenever I was here, my blood pumped harder, warmer, and I wondered if hers did, too. Did she feel it, that pulse? Did the crisp scent of the rink make her a little high like it did me?

These two grow close fast and hard. And it is beautiful to witness. Seeing Mark open up again and watching Stevie find out what it really feels like to be in love...it's something magical. Their dates will have you smiling, laughing, and feeling like YOU are falling in love. And that's exactly what I did. I fell in love with these characters. Hard and fast.

Their is something special about this book, that leaves you completely satisfied but still begging for more, just because you will be obsessed with Melo and Stevie. And Johnson's writing is everything.

"Being with Mark was like riding in a speeding car. Every moment, every curve was fast. Touch, and kisses, and feeling."
