Summary:

Excerpt:
Jamie stumbled
through the bedroom, still dim, in the early morning fog. “Ow,” he groaned,
stubbing his toe on the leg of a table beside the unfamiliar bed. Trying to be
quiet, he slipped back under the sheet. The mattress creaked and shifted under
his weight. He avoided accidently pulling a stray lock of long blond hair,
splayed, beside him, on the bed. Was it Rachel or Melanie? He couldn’t remember
her name. It was there, somewhere on his tongue, along with the taste of her
lips. Maybe Fifi? Phoebe. Yes, Phoebe. Tangled in the sheets, she rolled over
and put her arm on his muscled chest. She made cute, sleepy noises. He
considered rubbing his hand over her smooth stomach, up toward her chest,
waking her, and picking up where they’d left off.
Instead,
he closed his eyes.
The
memory of Kira’s smile, in the early summer sun, was there behind his lids. Her
gaze, seaward, landed on him and brought him to places he thought he’d already
explored and conquered. Jamie sighed. As much as he tried to forget about her,
like the incoming tide, she kept washing into his mind. Phoebe rolled over,
taking the sheet with her. He took this as his cue to leave.
Picking
his way across the back deck, scattered with empty bottles, wet towels, and
discarded cups, all remnants of the party the night before, Jamie chuckled: the
wooden walk of shame.
“You’re
a dog, Jamie Burke,” he whispered to himself, not having bothered to leave
Phoebe a note.
On
his way back to Dune Road, his temporary lodgings while back in the sleepy
seaside town, he invited the fresh salt air to wake him up. But his eyes, and
something in his chest, weighed heavily. Early morning cyclists breezed by. Dog-walkers
gave him a wide berth. He sensed they knew that he was just like the beasts on
their four legs, noses to the ground, sniffing out tail.

Deirdre Riordan Hall is the author of upper young adult and
new adult fiction, including her debut novel To the Sea, the first in the Follow
your Bliss series. She spends her days with her family, writing (what else?!)
at the custom-made desk her husband crafted, or seaside, pretending she's a
